A Cloak of Words - By: Clarice Chan

Scratches and scuffles

Withering paper roses bloom under me

Frustration, stress, disappointment

Rivers flow from my

furiously writing hand, but

I crumble them up

Light sounds of scratches,

heavy sounds of scratches,

scratches that tear the paper apart

Then finally,

the dark lead bleeds from my hand,

obedient after so long

Blossoms on the paper,

the threads of words weaving

a tapestry, wrapping around my shoulders

Such a dear comfort,

this cloak I’ve lost for so long

Finally returned to me

Please give a detailed explanation about the meaning and main idea of this poem.

The main idea is about never giving up, to keep trying and trying until it finally comes to you, until you finally succeed.

Please explain your writing and thought process regarding this poem.

I was trying to come up with creative ideas for my poems but nothing was coming up, and I was so, so frustrated. Then the idea came to me: why not write a poem about this experience, this feeling?

Why did you choose to write this poem?

I wanted to show others that everybody gets this feeling sometimes, but that if you keep trying you will succeed. I wanted to inspire others to never give up, and to let them know they weren't the only ones struggling.
