Bubble and Ocean - By: Clarice Chan

Deep in the ocean,

the waters pitch black and merciless,

a fish exhaled softly. And a bubble

was born.

Obsidian

Midnight

Sapphire

Pastel

The bubble floated

to the top, and it beheld

the scorching light of the sun

in its eyes for the first time.

"Hello," said a voice.

The bubble looked around.

"Who are you?"

And so began the friendship

between ocean

and bubble.

The bubble

found its new friend perplexing.

Sometimes,

it was gentle as a mother,

caressing the bubble, singing it to sleep, rocking it

with soothing waves.

Sometimes,

it was a playful toddler,

tossing the bubble around

in its waves, chortling,

wanting to play.

Sometimes,

it was a moody teenager,

grumpy and determined

to flood ships and drag sailors

into its deadly, strangling

embrace.

And through it all,

the bubble rested by its side,

comforting it as it mourned

its starfish friends,

stranded on seashores for the rest of eternity;

as it wept for the coral,

bleached white as snow

by the humans.

One day,

the bubble awoke

to the violent roaring of a monster.

Waves churned to froth around it

as the ocean drew itself to its full height,

looming over an innocent island,

cackling madly as it prepared to wash the life off it.

The bubble cried out, begging it

to reconsider, to stop, and—

a stray twig, swirling in the water,

impaled it.

And that

was the end of the bubble

and its daring friendship with the

unpredictable ocean.

Please give a detailed explanation about the meaning and main idea of this poem.

The main idea of this poem is that there are lots of people who can be unpredictable, people who can change their mind anytime and betray or hurt you, and you mustn't lower your guard or trust them easily.

Please explain your writing and thought process regarding this poem.

I was trying to think of a simile to use in the poem so it would be more creative and interesting instead of just from my point of view, and I was just like, oh, what about a bubble and the ocean? Bubbles are fragile and trusting, and the ocean is unpredictable and can take on many different forms.

Why did you choose to write this poem?

One of my friendships had just ended, rather brutally, I might add, and I wanted to warn others against trusting the wrong people. Always choose the people who surround you carefully, and if you sense that something is going to change, do something before it happens.
