Girls - By: Stephanie Chittle

I have never kissed a man–

Yet somebody has asked my hand

A beautiful person

A wonderful person

A gem in a million grains of sand

Why do you not understand?

A beautiful person

A wonderful person

Who’s part of her own rock band

And now what do you demand?

A beautiful person

A wonderful person

You say our love should be banned?

I am sure you misunderstand–

She’s a beautiful person–

A wonderful person

The most wonderful lesbian in all the land.

Please give a detailed explanation about the meaning and main idea of this poem.:

The poem is about a lesbian who is engaged to another girl, and somebody has made homophobic comments about her. The poem is basically her thoughs and feelings.

Please explain your writing and thought process regarding this poem.:

I wanted to write a poem about gay love. So I wrote the first line. I figured out a rhyme for that line, and wrote that down. I kind of just went with it. I didn't have a plan or anything like that; I kind of just played around with words until I had something.

Why did you choose to write this poem?:

I chose to write this poem because I love the LGBTQ+ community. I just wanted to write a poem about it. I wanted other people to read that poem, too.

Do you have any tips or anything to share with the youth writers who may be reading this?: Never forget that you are talented, not matter what hostile critics say.
