Is It Really You? - By: Aliyah Carry

I look into the mirror and ask myself

Is it really you?

After so many years I can finally see it

I see you

The sight is no longer foreign to my eyes

It has been so long I almost forgot

The sweetness in your soul

And the innocence of your heart

The vision is now clear in this two-way mirror

After the darkness faded it’s all I can see

Of course it is you

Because you are me

Please give a detailed explanation about the meaning and main idea of this poem.

This poem is about the moment when you look into the mirror and finally recognize yourself. When you look in the mirror, you see the child that became the young adult you are today and are happy to finally recognize who you are once again. You can see the innocence in your face back when you were a child and before life got hard.

Please explain your writing and thought process regarding this poem.

I wrote the poem as it came to me, and revised it over and over until it made sense. I wrote while I listened to music because it helps inspire me.

Why did you choose to write this poem?

I wrote about this because it’s a feeling I can relate to, looking into a mirror and not recognizing the face you see looking back at you. The title is also inspired by a song called “Is It Really You?” by Loathe. It is a song I have connected with recently and invoked this emotion within me to write.

Do you have any tips or anything to share with the youth writers who may be reading this?

Write when you are inspired by something, no matter what it is. When I try to force myself to write when I’m not in the mood to, it’s never my best work. Sometimes it takes time but you have to let the ideas come to you naturally.
