Living Our Dreams - By: Josie Kwok

one step at a time

as a toddler on their first day

slowly but eventually

uncertainly but confidently

racing and chasing

persisting and persevering

working towards the dreams from the baseline

aspiring to cross the finishing line

to step forward day after day

knowing soon we’ll find our way

fingers can’t count how much we’ve cried

and scars come even before tears could be dried

as though we’ll fall once more

we’ll go till we reach the shallow shore

Please give a detailed explanation about the meaning and main idea of this poem.

The meaning of this poem is to chase for your dreams, no matter how hard or impossible it might seem. Time after time, we'll keep failing, always, but we should still stand up and keep fighting, keep trying. One day, we will make it.

Please explain your writing and thought process regarding this poem.

I wrote this poem mostly due to a poetry project at school. I thought about my dreams to become a dancer, doing all I've ever wanted to do. Yet knowing the income would be low, and that this path would not be easy, the goal had always been thrown to the back of my mind. Despite that, most of the time, I'd keep trying to improve my dancing skills, because effort always pay off.

Why did you choose to write this poem?

Again, this poem was written due to an English project at school. I got inspiration from the song "A Million Dreams".

Do you have any tips or anything to share with the youth writers who may be reading this?

Keep chasing for you dreams! I know, for sure, someday you will make it. You can do this. Things might seem tough and hard, but keep fighting through it! I believe in you! <3
