The Nature of Life - By: Laura Mora

Drip.

Its cold outside,

leaves fall, crumble

under weight of raindrops

as lakes spill over.

Drop.

Feet freeze,

hair dampens, lips turn blue.

Unbearable is the grey

rim covering the sky.

Unbearable is the damp earth

sinking in with each step.

Drip.

But at the end

of each drop,

haze parts the sky,

leaves turn green,

water turns to life.

Beauty is the nature,

the water, the drips

and drops

That give us the gift of life

Please give a detailed explanation about the meaning and main idea of this poem.

This poem is a symbol for for how nature works and how it relates to the cycle of life. There is some instances of darkness and negativity but just like nature, the cycle of life is that from death comes new life and new growth.

Please explain your writing and thought process regarding this poem.

I was thinking of my home, British Columbia while writing this poem. I was thinking of the constant complaints about the rain, but used it to show how rain provides life no matter how much we complain about it.

Why did you choose to write this poem?

I wrote this poem as an assignment for my creative writing 11 class and it grew to be one of my favourite writing pieces.
