Untitled - By: Zehra Calvin

I swallow down the lump in my throat

it tries to claw its way out, and I'm the coward who makes way for it. I want to shout and cry, get angry and berserk, make a scene

Though I don't have a choice. Because who am I but nothing but a flicker for you? And I chuckle as I try to remind myself that you are the sun, and I am Icarus who tries and tries and tries and tries to make you pay heed to the melancholic song I play.

And as I fail to do so, I feel it. The wax melting, with the wind swaying, a fire inside my heart, slowly burning it hurts to hover over. Yet, it's freeing, and calmness comes over me, for I know an ocean awaits me. It will soothe over the scales I have left over, accepting everything I have to offer.

because you are the sun, burning and I am Icarus, who fell.

Please give a detailed explanation about the meaning and main idea of this poem.

The main idea of this poem is about how people often look for love everywhere, even in places where they know they won't be accepted. It's a poem about the human urge to yearn either for a place or a person :)

Please explain your writing and thought process regarding this poem.

Wrote this when I was 13 and was struggling with maintaining a proper relationship with everyone around me, and I tried to cope with it using this poem to show that there can be people who will accept you in place of others who won't :) 2 years down the line and just had the proper closure with a friend during the time so I figured it'd be best to show just this one little poem.

Do you have any tips or anything to share with the youth writers who may be reading this?

Feel free to make mistakes! It's ok to be cringe, it helps with the writing process I promise.
